Anti-Poverty Strategy: policies for an effective implementation

The European Anti-Poverty package adopted on 6 May 2026, puts forward an ambitious strategy aiming at accelerating poverty reduction by 2030 and helping to eradicate poverty in the longer run. The package includes the first-ever EU Anti-Poverty Strategy, a proposal for a Council Recommendation on fighting housing exclusion and a communication on strengthening the European Child Guarantee. Now implementation by the EU, Member States, national and regional authorities as well as by all the actors involved will be essential. 

Following the 2025 Bocconi University - European Commission (DG EMPL) joint event on anti-poverty policies, this 2026 edition will focus on how the Strategy’s goals can translate into concrete actions to prevent and address poverty.

The event will gather contributions from academia, policymakers, European Commission representatives, civil-society organisations and stakeholders. The discussions will focus in particular on the complex relationship between employment and poverty, from the opportunities of more effective labour-market activation to the risks of in-work poverty; and on affordability of key household expenditure items – such as housing.
