The 2024 US presidential election is expected to be the most consequential in recent history for the European Union. Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has promised to reduce America's military support to Ukraine and to raise tariffs on virtually all foreign imports to the US. Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic nominee, is expected to be more committed to a multilateral, rule-based international order. However, even a Democratic administration is likely to be more isolationist and protectionist than in recent years.

Two days after the November 5 elections, we will unpack the consequences from a European perspective. As is the tradition of IEP@BU, our focus will be on how European policymakers should and could react to the US election outcome.
