IEP Bocconi Fellow Marta Cartabia Named Among Fondation Robert Schuman’s “European Women Leading the Way”
The Fondation Robert Schuman has included Marta Cartabia, an IEP Bocconi fellow, among the 27 “European Women of Influence” featured in a newly published report.
The report presents profiles of 27 women selected to “highlight the decisive role played by women in the construction and influence of the European Union”. It showcases “exceptional women who illustrate, in a concrete way, the wealth and diversity of their careers across strategic fields”, underscoring that “anything is possible on our continent” and that, through their work and professional achievements, women are shaping Europe’s future.
As the report’s preface explains, these personal accounts pursue a threefold objective: to highlight women’s contributions to the Union; to demonstrate that Europe is a place where there are no barriers to women’s success; and, above all, to empower new generations by offering young European women ambitious role models—affirming that women are the future of Europe.
Marta Cartabia is a Full Professor of Italian and European Constitutional Law at Bocconi University. She is President Emeritus of the Italian Constitutional Court and served as Italy’s Minister of Justice.
The report includes an interview with Marta Cartabia, who shares her perspectives on Europe’s future. An excerpt follows:
“The European Union has influenced my career from day one. I am a specialist in constitutional law, but I became interested in European law during my final years of study. My thesis was on the European Constitution. In my work, I have always sought to reconcile national law with European law. My time at the Constitutional Court was marked by a notable openness in case law towards European principles. Europe has always been part of my work.
