Cardinal Matteo Maria Zuppi studied theology at the Pontifical Lateran University and graduated in Literature and Philosophy from the University of Rome. Ordained a priest in 1981, he served for many years in Rome, notably at Santa Maria in Trastevere, and was closely associated with the Community of Sant’Egidio.

Appointed auxiliary bishop of Rome in 2012, he became Archbishop of Bologna in 2015 and was created cardinal by Pope Francis in 2019. Since 2022 he has served as President of the Italian Bishops’ Conference and has been entrusted by Pope Francis with diplomatic and peace initiatives, including a mission aimed at exploring paths toward dialogue in the war between Russia and Ukraine.
