Martin Merlin

Martin Merlin is the Director for Financial Markets (FISMA-C) within the Directorate-General for Financial Stability, Financial Services and Capital Markets Union (FISMA) at the European Commission in Brussels.
He holds two Master’s degrees — one in Political Science and International Affairs, and another in Philosophy.
Mr. Merlin began his career at the French Treasury, where he worked in the Department of International Monetary and Financial Affairs. He later joined the European Commission, where he has built an extensive career across the many areas of financial services. Over the years, he has held several key positions, including serving in the Commissioner’s Cabinet, leading the coordination of Financial Services Policy as Head of Unit, and directing Banking, Insurance and Financial Crime before taking up his current role as Director of Financial Markets.
In his capacity as Director, he also represents the European Commission on both the Board of Supervisors and the Management Board of the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA).
