The Honorary President of the Institute, Mario Monti, was the keynote speaker at the opening ceremony of the international conference "Democracy Today," organized by the Konstantinos Karamanlis Foundation in Athens, on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of Greece's transition to democracy.
Konstantinos Karamanlis is a central figure in modern Greek history, having played a leading role in the process of restoring democracy after the military dictatorship in 1974, and in Greece's subsequent accession to the European Economic Community in 1981.
In his speech titled Demagony: How the Politics of Illusions Threatens Democracy, Monti addressed, among other issues, the risks of erosion faced by democratic systems due to rising demagogic tendencies and the progressive disaffection of citizens, and the need to reform the governance of the European Union.
Over 300 people attended the opening ceremony, including Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, former President of the Republic Prokopis Pavlopoulos, and former Prime Ministers Antonis Samaras and Kostas Karamanlis.
